OUR CORE VALUES

Toastmasters International's core values are integrity, dedication to excellence, service to the member, and respect for the individual.

Integrity

Explained in the dictionary as moral soundness, honesty, freedom from corrupting influence or motive.

Integrity is an important asset in any human being - to be morally sound, honest, and free from any corruption. Such a principal can be learnt, if not already existing. We have been brought up, whether from school or from religion, to know between good and bad behaviour. We were born with conscience to know what is right and wrong.

Integrity is one of the qualities that earns respect from others.

What are the qualities in you that make people 'like' you or respect you?

Dedication to Excellence

The sky is the limit. Reach for the stars.

To excel is to do your best and beyond. Mediocre is not enough. The normal standard is not sufficient. Aim high, to achieve high. Nobody has ever dreamed small and achieved big results.

Doing your best to excel is a habit. It does not come to you just by the mere click of your fingers. It takes hard work and effort.

Hard work and effort takes dedication or commitment to achieve. The journey may be hard, but at least we know that there are helping hands around us to assist us along our journey in Toastmasters.

Service to the Member

Those who want to be first, must first be last. I like how on board a ship, should the ship start to sink and everyone has to abandon ship, the captain is the LAST to leave the ship.

If a leader does not know what the followers are going through, does not empathise with how they feel - the leader would have a hard time trying to lead.

They say a leader should lead by example - To run WITH the followers. We serve one another, not because we want to show how good we are, but to share and impart what we know to one another.

Respect for the Individual

We are a colourful country - with multilingualism, various races and a variety of religions. To regard one another as equal and the same or better - that is to respect the individual.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Not one person is born without faults. Whether it is about the person's character, personality or even physically, we are not perfect.

However, looking past one another's weaknesses is easy. We focus on the person's strength and see the person for what he or she is worth.

Everyone in Toastmasters is there to learn. With the same goals in mind, that is incentive enough to respect an individual.

----------------

These core values are easy mantra to repeat. But is it easy to do and follow?

Each of us already have these values in us. Every human being has these values. It's just HOW MUCH of the values are in you.

Let's take one step at a time and never forget, there is always someone there to hold your hand.

Success is Ours.
